State Farm Insurance Companies was founded in 1922 by George Mecherle, a former farmer, to offer complete insurance and financial services. The group of companies, headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois, has since grown to include:

• State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company
• State Farm Fire and Casualty Company
• State Farm Life Insurance Company
• and other affiliates

State Farm originally began as a mutual automobile insurance company owned by the policyholders, not as a crop insurance carrier as many believe. The company's specialty was low-cost auto insurance for farmers, who Mecherle believed had specific needs and deserved preferential rates, because they typically drove less and had fewer accidents than city drivers.

State Farm expanded its services to include other types of insurance including homeowners insurance and life insurance. The company further expanded into banking and financial services, as well.

As of 2005, the group of companies employed more than 79,000 workers, with 16,700 agents servicing 71.6 million insurance policies in the United States and Canada.
