Health & Medical Insurance

Health insurance, also called medical, major medical or hospitalization insurance covers medical bills incurred because of sickness or accidents.

These types of policies can be as limited as only covering major illness and hospitalization, to as broad as paying for the doctor to take a look at the hang-nail on your big toe!

What this means is that you need to study the fine print when comparing policies -- what are the maximum limits for various medical circumstances? Does the policy pay for annual checkups? What about pre-existing conditions?

Consider your own health situation, and potential health problems inherited from your parents such as diabetes and heart disease. If you're still young and starting a family, you'll want insurance that covers childbirth expenses and your new family's regular health checkups. If you travel a lot internationally, you'll want to be sure you are covered while in foreign countries.

Your insurance agent can help you determine what health or medical insurance you need. You will want to review your health insurance coverage periodically, especially if you're getting married and planning a family.

Keep in mind that some health insurance policies cover visits only to a selected list of physicians, and may not cover you while outside of your home country.

Premiums for health insurance coverage get higher and higher as you grow older, because of the presumption that you'll have more medical needs as you age. If you need a policy that covers the broadest range of circumstances, you'll also pay more for your medical coverage.

Usually the cheapest way to get the most medical benefits is to be part of a group insurance policy through your place of work or through a professional organization, so be sure to take a look at those options as well.
